Signs of an Excellent Flooring Contractor

Avoid Softwoods

All tree species are different.  This is why it’s important you ask a VCH hardwood flooring contractor about the attributes of a wood species before buying.  We recommend dog owners stay away from wood species that are soft because they are more likely to scratch and dent.  Some softwoods that dog owners should avoid include carbonized bamboo, American cherry, American walnut, cedar, pine and fir.  The good news about some of these tree species is that while they are less durable, they are also more expensive.  In our opinion, why spend more money for hardwood flooring that won’t last.   Save some money and frustration by installing hardwood floors that will last you for many years to come.

Use Solid Hardwood

Solid hardwood flooring is more durable, which means it will take more effort to scratch and dent the surface.  Like the name suggests, solid hardwood flooring is completely made out of hardwood.  On the other hand, engineered wood floors have only a thin slice of hardwood sitting on top of plywood.  As you might imagine, engineered wood floors aren’t as durable and aren’t recommended for dog owners.  Engineered wood is more water resistant, but they can not be refinished.  Therefore, solid hardwood is better with pets.

Rethink Distressed Hardwoods

It’s now the trendy thing to install distressed hardwood floors.  The great thing about distressed hardwood floors is that if your dog scratches the floors, you likely won’t be able to tell because it will blend into the patina.  Just think of the extra scratches as a way of adding character to an already distinctive distressed floor.  If you hate the look of distressed hardwood floors, don’t worry about it.  There are plenty of other types you can pick out a hardwood floor your dog can’t destroy.

Pick Woods with Strong Graining

Woods with strong grain patterns are better at hiding scratches, dents, and other damage caused by dogs.  Wood, as a material, can have its hardness quantified using the Janka rating, the industry standard rating.  With this rating, the resistance of wood samples to denting and wear is measured.  Varying on account of wood grain direction, different woods are tested based on the cut surface of a stump cut from the material.  The measure of hardness and strength is pounds-force (lbf).  For example, red oak, Brazilian ebony, and hickory woods have strong graining that distracts the eye from scratched hardwood floors.  Be sure to ask the VCH salesperson about other tree species with strong graining.

Avoid Glossy Finishes

We can understand the allure of glossy finished hardwood floors.  However, they are not the best choice for dog owners.  Hardwood floors with glossy finishes show every single scratch and dent in startling detail.  For dog owners, we recommend choosing satin or matte finishes for hardwood floors.

Area Rugs over Hardwood Flooring

Many of our customers choose carpet for its comfort, warmth, and sound absorption.  Any room with hardwood flooring can be transformed by a cozy area rug.  An area rug can also be used to designate a space for child’s play or a puppy’s nap.   Area rugs allow you to get bright playful patterns for your child’s bedroom or playroom and a muted psychedelic when they become teens.  Once they get older, it is easy enough to replace their old rug for a new one in a more mature pattern.

Vinyl Flooring

Vinyl flooring is great for areas of your home that receive high foot traffic.  Not only is luxury vinyl flooring resistant to spills and scratches, but it’s durable enough to last for 15 to 20 years.  For this reason, many of our customers choose vinyl flooring for bathrooms and kitchens.

Ask our sales team about luxury vinyl flooring that lets you copy the look of hardwood, stone, and other natural materials. Unlike hardwood, you won’t have to worry about your vinyl plank flooring being stained or saturated with water.  This means your new flooring won’t be destroyed if the family dog is in the middle of potty training and has an accident inside.

If you have a child just learning how to walk, you may feel more at ease with vinyl flooring.  Vinyl flooring provides more slip resistance, as well as a level stable surface for your child to learn how to walk.  Vinyl flooring is also a great choice if you have a family member who needs a walker or wheelchair to move through the home.  As a flooring contractor, we offer a wide range of colors and styles for you to choose.
